Performative Virtual Architecture as Practice-led Research
This is an ongoing series of real-time moving-image works investigating how lived spatial experience can be translated into affective virtual environments. Extending Giuliana Bruno’s cinematic framework of emotional geography into virtual space, this research explores how emotion, memory, and spatial perception are shaped through the rhythmic coupling of virtual architecture, cinematic mediation, and procedural systems. Rather than treating virtual space as a neutral container or visual backdrop, the series approaches it as an expressive medium through which spatial experience can be remediated, performed, and reconfigured. Each practice tests a different relation between space and camera, from automated virtual promenades to procedural montage and performative walking. Together, the series asks how real-time engines can produce architectures that are rhythmically activated, watched, and felt.
Transition 001: Waiting (WIP)
2026
︎ automated virtual promenade
The work unfolds as a virtual promenade through an abstracted, station-like environment composed of infrastructural fragments—platforms, rails, benches, and structural frames. These elements evoke spaces of transit while persistently withholding destination or function. The environment operates as a digital “non-place” noted by Marc Augé, a space defined by circulation, anonymity, and temporal disorientation, where identity is suspended and experience is reduced to movement and waiting. The station appears operational yet purposeless, familiar yet detached from memory or resolution.

Rather than narrative progression, the space evolves through subtle, incremental variation. Drawing on Lefebvre’s “Rhythmanalysis”, the work structures experience through repetition, looping, and minor deviation. Rhythm here is mechanical and procedural: the continual modulation of spatial arrangement and pacing produces a prolonged temporal condition in which waiting emerges as an active, sustained state rather than a pause between events.

Transition 002: Home (WIP)
2026
︎ procedural montage
Transition 002: Home explores how autobiographical experiences of home, migration, and unstable dwelling can be translated into procedural and cinematic virtual space.
The project contrasts two forms of home: the permanent home of childhood, family memory, and accumulated time, and the temporary homes of relocation, rental living, and repeated departure. Rather than reconstructing these spaces realistically, the work translates their emotional and rhythmic qualities into metaphorical virtual architectures. A singular intimate home is placed against a procedurally generated field of apartment-like units, adapted from the logic of procedural dungeon generation. Within this expanding spatial system, repeated rooms, furniture, windows, and workspaces produce a rhythm of sameness, replacement, and restart.
